Sallins Dry Dock – Interpretative Sign
Interpretation design connects people with environments. It is an important way of engaging communities locally. It can help people connect with the natural world or urban landscape and encourage learning on a range of subjects from history and heritage to our natural environment. We were asked to design this Interpretative Sign for the Sallins Dry Dock on the Grand Canal. This dock was constructed in 1783 and used for 60 years. It was used to inspect, repair and maintain the canal boats. It may be the oldest dry dock on the Grand Canal network.
James Lawless TD, Kildare North, unveiled the Sallins Drydock Heritage sign on Sunday October 29, 2023 is a first step in the Restoration project. The sign has been created with the support of graphic designer Eamon Sinnott, Waterways Ireland, IntoKildare, Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI), IWAI Kildare, Cill Dara Le Gaeilge and local historian Liam Kenny.
